A Clear Path Forward
We listened carefully to the City Commission’s feedback last Tuesday night and are moving forward with a simpler STAR Bonds proposal that does not include Costco.
What hasn’t changed is our vision for Lawrence’s future and the tremendous opportunity for growth west of Highway K-10. Lawrence needs more housing choices, and making that possible begins with infrastructure. Roads, utilities, and other essential improvements must be in place before new neighborhoods can take shape.
That’s where STAR Bonds offer Lawrence a valuable opportunity. By using state sales tax revenues generated by the development, along with eligible local sales tax revenues, we can help finance infrastructure the City would otherwise have to fund. This provides an opportunity to bring state resources back to Lawrence, helping new housing development move forward while reducing the financial burden on the City.
Housing is about much more than building homes. It should be part of a planned development with unique shops, restaurants, and entertainment within easy reach by foot, bike, or a short drive. Bringing housing and businesses together also means economic development. It creates opportunities to attract and retain residents, support local employers and new businesses, strengthen existing businesses throughout the City, and grow the City’s tax base. Our vision also includes recreational and destination attractions that will bring visitors to Lawrence, generate economic activity, and improve the quality of life for those who already call Lawrence home.
So, where do we go from here? We get back to work.
We’re refining our proposal, simplifying the STAR Bonds district, and seeking closer collaboration with City Staff to establish a clear process and ensure the City Commission has the information it needs to evaluate the project. We will also continue sharing our progress with you and the Lawrence community.
We’ve invested years in this vision because we believe in what it can mean for Lawrence. One setback doesn’t change the need for housing, the opportunity for economic growth, or our determination to make it happen. We’re prepared to do the work, make the changes, and come back with a stronger plan.
The opportunity is still here. And so are we.
